We must confront the criminals
Dear Editor,
As rampant criminality has our people worried for their safety, and as crime threatens tourism and the country’s overall economic growth, it is clear that neither the past nor the present minister of national security has a clue about a solution.
The present commissioner of police offers no greater comfort as he only speaks of the deep-seated causes of crime as an excuse for his failure. Yes, the causes are deep-seated. Yes, we have to address them with long-term strategies, but we won’t be here long enough to implement them unless we first have effective policing to confront the dog-heart criminals who are immune to seminars and semantic name changes.
The police force needs to be restructured, reshaped and incentivised to do its job. To motivate the good men and women of the force, the Government must regrade salaries by eliminating waste in police accounts, creating economies of scale elsewhere in the budget, or even imposing a new national security tax to fund the salary increases. Million-dollar bonuses should be given to officers who effectively fight crime.
Additionally, we need a commissioner who is a brave crime fighter. The force needs to be led by men like Keith “Trinity” Gardner or Reneto Adams who can put fear into criminals. We must smash the criminal gangs. Criminals must fear the police.
The ex-policeman who made the allegations against serving officers on a video making the rounds on social media should be taken into witness protection overseas and if his charges are proven, the men involved should be dismissed and prosecuted.
Why are we not offering plea deals to criminals so that when one is caught he is offered immunity for ratting out his confederates? It has worked extremely well in bringing down the mafia in New York. We have to take the fight to the criminals,we cannot forever cower behind bars and accept the lame releases of a security minister and police commissioner.
