Police worried about gang revenge attacks

Police worried about gang revenge attacks

Spanish Town, Montego Bay and Bedward Gardens, St Andrew at most risk

COMMISSIONER of police Owen Ellington says that the risk of retaliatory attacks on security forces, especially police, has been raised to ‘extremely high’.

In a statement this afternoon the commissioner urged especial vigilance in the communities of Spanish Town, Montego Bay and Bedward Gardens in St Andrew – communities where police personnel have reported being attacked and/or threatened by gang members.

Bedward Gardens, August Town

Police personnel reported coming under sustained gunfire yesterday, after men allegedly led by wanted man Christopher ‘Dog Paw’ Linton killed three members of a family, including a 6-year-old boy and burned their bodies  in the community.

A reward of $250,000 is being offered for the arrest and charge of Linton.

The police in the Old Capital have reported an increase in criminal activity since the recent arrest of Tesha Miller, the reputed leader of the Klansman Gang which is based in the city.

“Police in Spanish Town will not have a good Christmas if Tesha remains in prison,” personnel have reportedly been told.

Innocent persons without criminal affiliation are being targeted to undermine confidence in the security forces and that these attacks are spreading to other areas under the influence of the Klansman Gang, said the police.

“I am giving the assurance that the criminal case involving Tesha Miller will be pursued vigorously through the courts. Miller will be charged and the police will oppose bail until trial. Every effort is being made to protect witnesses in the case and to secure their evidence at trial. Our members will not be deterred by the threats they have received and will continue to support law abiding citizens who simply want peace in their communities,” said Ellington.

Police in St James have reported threats in connection with a major drug seizure in the Second City. A district constable was shot and injured in St James recently.

“The Police are committed to providing protection for all Jamaicans and we are appealing for assistance. I am also asking citizens to remain alert and communicate with the Police by informing us in advance of any group activities such as funerals, treats, parties or any other such activities so that adequate security can be provided,”  said Ellington.

He urged members of the public to call Police Control at 119; Operation Kingfish at 811 or Crime Stop at 311.
