Supreme Court petition filed to oust Hay-Webster
THE Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) filed a petition in the Supreme Court this morning to oust People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament (MP) Sharon Hay-Webster from Parliament on the grounds that she holds dual citizenship.
The petition was filed by the law firm Usim, Williams and Company on behalf of the JLP.Related story:JLP going after Sharon Hay-Webster
JLP officials announced at a press conference yesterday that they would file the petition. This, after JLP MP Shahine Robinson was booted from Parliament after a petition brought on by the PNP’s Manley Bowen.
Robinson, who was a naturalised US citizen, is said to have renounced her citizenship, and will contest a by-election in the St Ann north east constituency on December 20.
Hay Webster, who has represented the PNP since 1997, has admitted in the past that she was born in the United States.
According to the JLP, Hay Webster was a US citizen at the time of nominations for the 2007 general elections and should not be a member of the House.
Four JLP MP’s have been booted from their seats resulting from dual citizen challenges by the PNP since the general elections.
