MONTEGO BAY, St James — A parish judge will examine video evidence before considering bail for Kimani Alcott, who is accused of the 2021 murder of a Jamaican-born citizen of Canada. Alcott was remanded until today, Thursday, November 2 when the case returns to court.

Alcott, who appeared before Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley on Tuesday, is charged with the murder of 46-year-old Collin Wright of Stainton Drive, Mississauga, Canada, and injuring another man. Wright was visiting relatives at a section of the community known as Bottom Cambridge at the time of the incident.

The court was told that the file was still incomplete as several documents — including the post-mortem report, the scene of crime report, and a statement from the arresting officer — were still outstanding.

The video footage, which was also outstanding, was made available to the court but Alcott’s lawyer Chumu Paris, who intends to apply for bail, but the hearing was postponed so that both he and the judge could properly analyse the footage before the judge considers bail.

According to the allegations, about 7:00 pm on January 10, 2021, Wright was sitting in the yard with his cousin who operates a shop when two men entered and ordered cigarettes and rum. They were there told that neither was available and left but later returned.

One of the men pulled a handgun and opened fire, hitting Wright multiple times before fleeing the scene. The other man in Wright’s company was also injured during the attack.

The police were summoned and, upon their arrival, Wright was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
