Marcus Garvey Memorial Lecture this Friday
Discovery Bauxite’s vice-president and Country Manager Delroy Dell will deliver the annual Marcus Garvey Memorial Lecture at St Ann Parish Library, St Ann’s Bay, on Friday, June 9, commencing at 10:30 am.
This is the 12th in a series sponsored by the St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation in association with Jamaica Library Service. The lectures are timed to mark the anniversary of the national hero’s death on June 10, 1940.
The lecture will focus on Garvey as a game-changer, tracking the background, history, and achievements that prompted American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr to describe Garvey as “the first black man to give millions of negroes a sense of dignity and destiny”.
The lecture symbolically takes place in the library’s auditorium, adjacent to Garvey’s statue, and several metres from his birthplace.
Previous lecturers in the series include historian and academic Rex Nettleford (now deceased), former Governor General Sir Kenneth Hall, university lecturer Dr Kadamawe K’nife, attorney Lord Anthony Gifford, historian Arnold Bertram, and educator James Walsh.
The lecture is open to the public.
