ROSHAWN Clarke of Camperdown High stormed to a National Junior Record of 47.85 and captured gold in the 400m hurdles while equalling the World Under-20 record at the National Senior and Junior Championship at the National Stadium on Friday night.

The 19-year-old Clarke, of Swept Track Club, considered too good for his age group, destroyed the seniors and was just shy of the national record of 47.60 held by Winthrop Graham since 1993.

Clarke’s 47.85 is the fourth-best time in the world amongst the seniors, sitting only behind world record holder Karsten Warholm of Norway with a season’s best 46.52, Americans CJ Allen with 47.58 and Rai Benjamin with 47.74.

“Normally when I have a big race like this I listen to my coach and execute. I have a super coach, and I did that and I saw 47 on the clock,” said Clarke.

Behind Clarke was Jaheel Hyde in 48.45, with the fast-closing Assinie Wilson of Titans third with 48.50. The fast-starting Robin Black, running out of lane eight, was fourth in 49.02.

“I was a little surprised but I know I could have run it, and I give thanks it came at the right time. I want to go to the World Championships, make the final, and bring home a medal for my country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Holy Childhood’s Abigail Wolfe won the girls’ Under-18 100m in 11.76, ahead of Canelia Hope of Camperdown in 11.95. Edwin Allen’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge captured the Under-20 title in 11.46 with her teammate Tonie-Ann Forbes second in 11.49.

Javorne Dunkley of St Elizabeth Technical won the boys’ Under-20 100m in an impressive 10.14 while Jeevan Newby of Motorcade Club was second in 10.23.

The boys’ Under-18 100m was won by Tramaine Todd of St Elizabeth in 10.46, ahead of Gary Card of Wolmer’s Boys’ in 10.61. Ainsley McGregor, also of Wolmer’s, was third in 10.66.

Earlier, Jaeda Robinson of Immaculate Conception kicked-started the second day capturing gold in the girls’ Under-18 triple jump with a leap of 11.90m (1.0). St Catherine’s High’s Rohanna Sudlow was second with 11.73m.

Shamoyea Morroz of Edwin Allen High won the girls’ Under-18 discus throw with 44.69m, ahead of Najhada Seymour of Excelsior High with 43.83m. Able Mills of St Catherine High was third with 43.17m.

The boys’ Under-18 shot put was won by Javontae Smith of Munro College with 16.63m, ahead of Kingston College’s Despiro Wray with 16.17m. Alex Benjamin of Titchfield High was third with 13.21m.

Edwin Allen’s Akaylea Brown captured the girls’ Under-18 high jump with 1.65m, the same as her teammate Asia McKay.

Michael-Andre Edwards of Jamaica College won the boys’ Under-18 long jump with a leap of 7.20m (0.9). Anthony Hall of BB Coke High was second with 6.83m.

Joel Morgan of Edwin Allen captured the boys’ Under-18 1500m in 4:10.69, just ahead of KC’s Rekelme Hunter in 4:10.81. Jamaica College’s Tyrone Lawson finished third in 4:13.98.

Barrain Smith of St Elizabeth Technical High School took the boys’ Under-20 1,500m in 4:01.52, with the KC pair of Ainsley Campbell (4:08.44) and Jaquan Coke (4:10.53) getting second and third, respectively.

Excelsior’s Daniel Wright looked good as he demolished the field in the boys’ Under-18 400m hurdles in an impressive 50.81.

Jaheen Bell of St Jago took the Under-20 crown in 51.30 in a driving finish, ahead of KC’s Antonio Forbes who was second in 51.54. Tyrece Hyman of MVP closed late for third in 51.60.

Chennai Jarrett of St Elizabeth High captured gold in the Under-18 girls’ 400m hurdles in 1:01.52 minutes, ahead of Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall High in 1:04.51. In the girls’ Under-20 400m hurdles Tonyan Beckford of Edwin Allen took gold in 58.79, ahead of T’Kylia Bennett of Excelsior in 1:02.26.
