Clarendon College among five into second round
TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Former champions Clarendon College led five more schools into the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition on Saturday after blanking Lennon High 3-0 in their Zone H return-round game at the Toll Gate Community Centre in Clarendon.
Clarendon College, William Knibb and and Cedric Titus from Zone C all mantained perfect win records, while Happy Grove and Titchfied High from Zone O also confirmed their places.
Eleven schools have now booked second-round spots as they join Manning’s School, St Elizabeth Technical, York Castle High, Dinthill Technical, McGrath High and Central High.
Meanwhile, a number of schools have made big steps towards qualifying and these include defending champions Garvey Maceo High, Frome Technical and Tacky High.
Marques Reid, Christopher Hull and Keheim Dixon all scored for Clarendon College as they secured Zone H honours with 18 points from six straight wins while Edwin Allen High stayed in second place on 11 points with a 5-0 win over Thompson Town High.
Jahiem Sankar scored four goals as William Knibb thumped Muschett High 9-0 in their Zone C game and advanced with 15 points, the same as Cedric Titus who beat Herbert Morrison Technical 2-1.
William Knibb and Cedric Titus will meet on Monday for the first time this season, knowing both have already secured their places from Zone C.
A 2-2 draw between Happy Grove and Titchfield High was enough to send both through from Zone O, on nine points each, after Port Antonio High scored eight goals in their 4-4 draw,
Frome Technical won their sixth-straight game in Zone B with a 5-1 victory over Hopewell High as they inched to within a point of qualifyng for the second round but were kept waiting after the game between Rusea’s High and Green Island was called off due to heavy rains and a waterlogged field at the Collin Miller Sports Complex.
Garvey Maceo beat Vere Technical 2-0 in their Zone N top-of-the-table clash — their fifth-straight victory — with two penalties coming from Nevaughn Myrie in the first half and Olando Lawrence in the second half.
Garvey Maceo are leading on 16 points, six more than Vere Technical, while Foga Road High beat Kemps Hill 1-0 to stay in contention for a second-round spot.
Irwin High snapped a three-game winless run to beat Green Pond High 2-0 and move to 18 points in Zone A, while Cornwall College moved into second place with a 4-0 win over Anchovy High.
