EPL leaders Arsenal set to heap more misery on Everton
Having spent over 300 million euros on eight new players during the just-concluded transfer window, Chelsea will be aiming to kick-start their season with a London derby win over Fulham today. Then, on Saturday, the impressive league leaders Arsenal are expected to heap more misery on the relegation-threatened Everton when they travel to Goodison Park for the early kick-off.
Event 1 – EPL – Chelsea vs Fulham – 3:00 pm
Chelsea face a quick turnaround with Fulham after recently losing to their west London rivals for the first time since 2006. Chelsea won seven consecutive matches against Fulham before losing 2-1 recently and will be aiming to resume normal services after spending over 300 million euros during the January transfer window. When Chelsea were beaten by Fulham it was the fifth loss in seven Premier League matches, but they have since edged Crystal Palace 1-0 and played out to a 0-0 draw with Liverpool last weekend.
Lucky number 38 for Fulham, that’s what the fans will be hoping for when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea. Their 2-1 win at home over the Blues last month has had fans dreaming of a first-ever league double over their London rivals at the 38th time of asking. Indeed, Fulham would love nothing more than to spoil the feel-good factor of their neighbours who shelled out an eye-watering amount on transfers this January. With that said, Fulham make the short trip to Stamford Bridge in poor form, as after their win over Chelsea which made it five-straight wins on the bounce, their form has dipped since then. They have suffered back-to-back losses to Newcastle and Tottenham in the league, before being held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland in the FA Cup last weekend.
KEY STATS
Chelsea are the only side yet to concede a first-half goal at home in the Premier League this season. They’ve not conceded in any of their last 10 first halves at Stamford Bridge, last having a longer such run between December 2007 and August 2008 (11).
Fulham — won 2-1 at home to Chelsea in the reverse fixture last month. They’re looking to complete their first-ever league double over the Blues, with this the 38th different campaign in which they’ve met.
Both sides – Chelsea have lost just two of their 37 home league games against Fulham (W22 D13) and are unbeaten in their last 17 against them at Stamford Bridge (W11 D6) since a 2-0 loss in November 1979.
The betting tip: Chelsea win
Event # 2
Premier League leading side Arsenal will be aiming to return to winning ways when they face struggling Everton at Goodison Park. Arsenal will enter this clash off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup last Friday; however, the Gunners, Arsenal, have won their last two Premier League matches landing two big blows on rivals recently in the form of Tottenham and Manchester United. They are currently sitting five points clear of second-placed Manchester City at the top of the table, also with a game in hand on Man City. Arsenal have lost just once in the league all season, conceding only 16 goals, and should be confident of taming Everton’s feeble attack to secure a vital three points and stretch the lead to eight points before Manchester City plays.
Sean Dyche was confirmed as Everton manager earlier this week and could hardly have asked for a tougher first game in charge as his struggling side welcome a Gunners team aiming to bounce back from a Cup defeat. A 2-0 loss to West Ham in their last game was the final straw that broke the camel’s back as it brought an end to Frank Lampard’s time in charge of Everton, and now Sean Dyche inherits a side in the midst of a raging relegation battle. That defeat was Everton’s fourth in a row in all competitions and they enter this clash against Arsenal with just three wins from the last 20 matches.
With that said, Arsenal are unlikely to show Everton any mercy as they continue to march towards what would be a surprise Premier League title, with this early kick-off giving them the chance to restore an eight-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the league.
Key Stats
Everton have won three of their last four Premier League games against Arsenal (L1), as many as they had in their previous 26 against them (D7 L16).
Arsenal have scored at least five goals on five separate occasions in Premier League games against Everton, including a 5-1 victory in their last meeting – no side has scored 5+ goals against another in the competition more often.
Both sides Arsenal have won 99 of their 202 league games against Everton (D43 L60) and could become the first team in English league history to register 100 wins against a specific opponent.
The betting tip: Arsenal win.
