J’can Reid notches fourth goal for Maltese team

Twenty-three-year-old Kemar Reid, a Jamaican midfielder playing in the Premier League in Malta, has scored his fourth goal this season when he secured a point for St Andrews against Gzira United in the southern European island country located in the Mediterranean Sea.

Scoring in the 61st minute Reid, who played for Sporting Central Academy before arriving in Malta in 2016, ensured that St Andrews maintain their place above the relegation zone in the 14-team competition.

St Andrews are in 11th place with 15 points, while Gzira stay in fourth place on 34 points, two ahead of defending champions Hibernians, who are fifth.

Starting in five of his six games for St Andrews this season, Reid has been a boon for the Maltese outfit after his previous unit Mosta survived the relegation play-off last season.

One of the three smallest teams in the Maltese Premier League, St Andrews have been in the top-flight division since 2015.

Reid, who is one of eight Jamaicans playing in Malta — all for St Andrews — is being represented by Craig Butler of Phoenix Academy.

He also scored against Floriana, Hamrun Spartans, and Tarxien Rainbows after not being named in the squad for almost the first four months of the season, which got underway last August.

St Andrews will next play Reid’s former team Mosta on Friday at 1:00 pm Jamaican time in a home match at the MFA Centenary Stadium in Ta’Qali.

The Maltese Premier League season is scheduled to end on April 22.

— Paul Reid
