Lilliput, Cambridge in race for final semis spot
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Lilliput Rovers and Cambridge FC will be in a head-to-head race to take the fourth and final spot in the semi-finals of the St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Major League on the final day of the regular season.
The final day promises to be dramatic as one of the two will advance to the semi-finals, even if both lose, as they will be playing teams that have already booked their places but none of the final positions are guaranteed yet.
Lilliput Rovers and Cambridge FC are on 19 points from 11 games and will be hoping to join leaders Reggae Youths (25 points), Flanker FC (23 points) and Granville United (22 points) in the semi-finals set to be played later this month.
Lilliput Rovers hold a slight advantage over Cambridge FC, on goal-difference, after beating them 3-1 last week and will play Reggae Youths who will need to win to ensure they are the top-seeded team going through.
Cambridge FC will face Granville United at the UDC Field.
Flanker FC have, arguably, the easiest task, facing a Heights FC team that has no hopes of advancing.
Reggae Youths are coming off an 11-0 trouncing of Heights FC last week, snapping a two-game losing skid, and will go into the game as favourites against Lilliput Rovers.
Cambridge FC trail Lilliput Rovers by seven goals and will have to beat Granville United by a wide margin and then hope Lilliput Rovers lose by a wide margin as well.
