Miniature Man runs away with Announcers’ Trophy feature
Under a well-executed ride from jockey Abigail Able, Miniature Man easily won the $1.14-million Caymanas Park Announcers’ Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
The four-year-old chestnut gelding Miniature Man was a length and a half ahead of rivals in the three-year-old and upward Restricted Overnight Allowance contest over six and a half furlongs (1,300m).
The ever-patient Able held Miniature Man off the pace a bit in the early goings as stablemate Super Duper (Anthony Thomas) set the fractions ahead of Amy The Butcher (Dick Cardenas) and Big Big Daddy (Dane Dawkins) down the backstretch.
Able bided her time before sending Miniature Man in pursuit of Super Duper, navigating the half-mile (800m) turn. The Jason DaCosta trainee then drew alongside his stablemate in deep stretch for a brief battle, then drew clear inside the final furlong (200m) to win easily at the wire.
Unruly Boss (Javaniel Patterson) came from far behind to snatch second from Super Duper. After splits of 23.1 x 46.3 x 1:12.0, the final time was recorded at 1:19.1.
“I wasn’t worried at any point as I was very comfortable throughout the race. I rode off the trainer’s instructions, and basically that was that. I got a good break, sat close to the pace and asked him to run the last two furlongs,” Able told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, trainer Alford Brown and jockey Dane Dawkins won two each to share the spotlight. Brown saddled Alexa’s Lodge (Dick Cardenas) in the seventh race and Yellowstone (Tevin Foster) in the ninth race.
Dawkins booted home Step in Faith for trainer Leroy Tomlinson in the first race and One Don for trainer Gary Subratie in the fourth race.
Racing continues next weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
