Morrison, Seville among four J’can winners in Italy
Natasha Morrison and Oblique Seville were back-to-back winners in their respective 100m races at Wednesday’s 59th Palio Citta’ della Quercia.
The meet at Stadio Quercia in Rovereto, Italy, is a World Athletics Continental Tour-silver.
Morrison, who set a meet record, and Seville were among four Jamaican winners as Rusheen McDonald, in the men’s 400m, and Shanieka Ricketts, in the women’s triple jump, were also victorious.
Both Morrison and Seville were also winners in Padova, Italy, on Sunday.
Morrison, who won a silver medal in the women’s 4x00m relays at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last month, ran 11.00 seconds (1.5m/s) to break the seven-year-old record of 11.02 set in 2016 by fellow Jamaican Christania Williams.
American Twanisha Terry finished second in 11.06 and Gina Bass of Gambia was third in 11.08. Briana Williams, who also won a relay medal in Budapest, was fifth in 11.22.
Seville, a relay bronze medal winner at the World Athletics Championships, ran 10.00 (0.7m/s) to easily beat World Championships finalist Ferdinand Omanyala (10.15) of Kenya and Mouhamadou Fall (10.22) of France.
Michael Campbell was fourth in 10.29, with Jamaican national champion Rohan Watson, also a relay bronze medallist, seventh in 10.45.
Ricketts, who only took three jumps, won with 14.92m (2.0m/s). She beat Thea Lafond of Dominica who had just one legal jump of 14.67m (1.8m/s) from two attempts.
Lithuania’s Dovile Kilty was third with a season’s best 14.04m (0.8m/s).
McDonald ran a strong second half to win the men’s 400m in 45.46. He beat Germany’s Manuel Sanders who clocked 45.53 seconds and Zakithi Nene of South Africa who was third in 45.69.
Amoi Brown was second in the 100m hurdles in 12.85 (0.9m/s) as Ireland’s Sarah Lavin, a World Championships semi-finalist, won with 12.76. American Taliyah Brooks was third with 12.91.
National record holder and World Championships finalist Rajindra Campbell was sixth in the men’s shot put with 20.24m.
Italy’s Zane Weir won with a meet record 21.88m, breaking his own previous record of 21.32m set in 2021. His compatriot Leonardo Fabbri was second with 21.35m, while American World Championships bronze medallist Joe Kovacs was third with 21.34m.
Orlando Bennett appeared to have been affected by a false start and finished seventh in the 110m hurdles, running 14.03 (1.0m/s). Senegal’s Louis Francois Mendy won with 13.40, followed by Roger Iribarne of Cuba in 13.49 and Hassane Fofana of Italy, who was third in 13.52.
