Mt Pleasant’s Stewart on verge of European move

After a successful season in which he helped Mount Pleasant FA to their first hold on the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), footballer Trivante Stewart is on the verge of a transfer to a European club.

The 23-year-old forward, who scored 18 goals in the JPL last season, is said to have had offers from London-based Charlton Athletic, currently in League One, the third tier of English football, and also from a club in Slovenia.

However, the Jamaica Observer has learnt that the biggest offer yet has come from another club which features in one of the top leagues in mainland Europe.

Stewart’s agent Kevin Cowan confirmed there have been “multiple offers”, and dialogue is ongoing, but declined to provide details.

“At this time I can only state that there are several clubs that are interested in signing Trivante, and there are a couple of very attractive offers on the table that are being considered. Unfortunately, I’m unable to provide any additional details at this time, because I’m in the middle of discussions,” he told the Observer.

He insisted, however, that the talented attacker will complete a move before the summer transfer window closes.

“Based on the developments, the expectation is that he’ll move to Europe during this transfer window,” Cowan said.

Paul Christie, the Mount Pleasant sporting director, said Stewart’s transfer is imminent.

“A club [in England] has shown 100 per cent in acquiring the services of Mr Stewart; however, the paperwork is yet to be completed… [but] the final decision will be made with all factors to be taken into consideration,” Christie said.

Stewart made his senior debut for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in a friendly international against Cameroon last November.
