ANOTHER dimension has been added to Sandals Royal Caribbean’s multifaceted approach to achieving Green Globe Certification this year.

Powered by the resort’s active environmental management system, team members are being trained to become torchbearers for the environment in a wide scale training and development programme.

Dubbed “Keeping us clean to stay green” the environmental workshops examine the role of Green Globe internationally and how certification can faster steer the resort towards the changing industry goal posts.

“One of the aims of the programme is to show team members that the benefits to be gained from sound environmental practices are not reserved for the hotel but are also applicable to their homes and communities,” cites Francois Mucchesi, the hotel’s environment manager.

So far, more than a third of the resort’s staff compliment has benefited from the two-hour sessions convened three times weekly by Fabian Thomas, training and entertainment manager at the resort.

“We hope to reach the entire team by the end of April,” Thomas said.

Underpinned by its environmental tripod of reuse, recycle and reduce, Sandals Royal has so far erected a number of preservation projects boasting both short- and long-term benefits. Among them, a gray water irrigation programme for the grounds and gardens; the use of compost technology for plant fertility management and departmental cost-saving environmental projects, manned by “Green Cops” — wards of the resort’s environmental machinery.
