5 Minutes with Moms on Mother’s Day

Today is Mother’s Day and Sunday Entertainment gave a few mothers the microphone to share advice and special memories.

Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall — Entertainer

Favourite memories as a mom?

To see my daughter Sean Taylor graduate from college in Nashville.

What’s the best thing about being a mom?

To hear your child tell how much they love and appreciate you and give you your little “choop choops”.

How do you juggle career and motherhood?

It’s easy. I have family here so whenever I travel I leave the kids with them. Whenever I travel, I check by phone and e-mail.

What would be the perfect mother’s day gift for you?

Just hearing their voices or seeing them.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job as a mother?

10.

What’s your advice to first time mothers?

Always listen to your kids and be objective.

Susan Simes — Producer, host Susan

Favourite memory as a mom

One little girl who passed her GSAT and went on to high school, one step further to realising her dream.

What’s the best thing about being a mom?

Just seeing them achieve certain things in life academically.

How do you juggle career and motherhood?

You keep up to date with them by calling often and monitoring their school work. Seeing to it that they have lunch money and are actually in school.

What would be the perfect mother’s day gift for you?

Having a child of my own.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job as a mother?

7.

What’s your advice to first time mothers?

Spend time with your children cause later on in life they will love you for it.

Janice ‘Lady G’ Fyffe — Entertainer

Favourite memory as a mom

When my first child passed his Common Entrance.

What’s the best thing about being a mom?

The love between you and your child.

How do you juggle career and motherhood?

It’s very difficult but because I care for my kids so much, I try my best to split the time.

What would be the perfect mother’s day gift for you?

For my kids and I to go on a cruise.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job as a mother?

10.

What’s your advice to first time mothers?

Just take care of your child, physically, emotional and mentally.

Cynthia Reid — Human resource exec

Favourite memories as a mom?

OMG – there are so many; however, one of the most comforting is just feeling those tiny arms thrown around your neck, hugging you, those soft cheeks pressing against yours and hearing the words “YOU ARE THE BEST MOMMY EVER” – every time I remember that I can’t help smiling – that is my ‘AHA’ Mommy moment.

What’s the best thing about being a mom?

Watching this little person grow, the features changing, knowing that I am responsible for providing the security and love to nurture him and build his confidence. Amazing experience and of all the responsibilities I have on a day-to-day basis, this is the most important and fragile one and I love it, I love being a Mommy … awesome experience.

How do you juggle career and motherhood?

Is this a trick question? Honestly this can be quite challenging sometimes; however, I have to be extremely creative in ensuring Ethan gets some Mommy time every day. I make him breakfast and get him ready every morning for school and we use this time bond and make contact for the day, we read or listen to stories in the car on the way to school, take my lunch time to pick him up and put in some quick homework time before heading back to work. Weekends are mainly dedicated to doing stuff with Ethan — homework, doing activities, baking a cake together (Ethan loves to bake) going to the movies, church or just simply hanging out at home on ‘jammies day’.

What would be the perfect mother’s day gift for you?

Last year Ethan insisted he wanted to make me breakfast for Mother’s Day – it was the best breakfast ever. This year, all I want is to hang out at home, have ‘jammies day’ and have breakfast served in bed.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job as a mother?

Oh man, this is a continuous learning experience — an experience that no university can teach you — this is raw on-the-job training. I still have a lot to learn, so I would rate myself a 7.

What’s your advice to first time mothers?

Savour each moment, laugh about the silly things with your child, every chance you get, tell that child how much you love him/her and that they are the best son/daughter in the world. Most important, make sure you get some ME time, it is important to the child and to you. It gets better believe me.

Grace ‘Spice’ Hamilton — Entertainer

Favourite memories as a mom

The first time when I saw my son Nicholas.

What’s the best thing about being a mom?

Seeing a part of me in my son.

How do you juggle career and motherhood?

I have a great family support thank God, my mom – Angella Hamilton, sisters and of course my fiancé who are always there for me. Whenever I have commitments I can always leave him and know he will be in good hands.

What would be the perfect mother’s day gift for you?

Just to be with my family would be a special gift. I’m not picky when it comes to gifts for Mother’s Day.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your job as a mother?

9

What’s your advice to first time mothers?

Take every advice you can get from experienced mothers, because it’s a learning process.
