Man fined $987k over ganja charges
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police have reported that a Clarendon man was on Monday fined a total of $987,000 in the St Catherine Parish Court for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA), committed in 2016.
Sentenced for possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and trafficking ganja, is 29-year-old Michael Lee, a labourer of Morgan’s Pass, Clarendon.
Reports are that on Saturday, August 20, 2016, a police team carried out an anti-narcotics operation along the Mandela Highway in St Catherine during which a silver Honda Civic motorcar with three men aboard was stopped and searched.
During a search of the vehicle, two knitted bags containing a total of fifteen parcels wrapped in brown masking tape, containing compressed ganja weighing over 100 pounds were reportedly found. All three men were arrested and charged.
On March 27, the men appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court where Lee pleaded guilty and the other two were freed.
Lee was sentenced on Tuesday and ordered to pay:
• $325,000 or six months for possession of ganja
• $652,000 or six months for dealing in ganja
• $10,000 or six months for trafficking ganja
Police said his bail was extended until Monday, September 24, 2018, for him to pay the fines. If he fails to do so, it will result in him serving time.
