KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) has paid tribute to veteran trade unionist Keith Comrie, with JCTU President St Patrice Ennis hailing him as a steadfast and passionate advocate for workers’ rights and a stalwart champion of social justice.

Comrie, who was the general secretary of the Union of Schools, Agricultural and Allied Workers (USAAW), reportedly passed away on Sunday.

Expressing profound sadness at his passing, the JCTU president said, “Keith Comrie was a steadfast and passionate advocate for workers’ rights, a trailblazer in the labour movement, and a stalwart champion of social justice.”

Noting that Comrie was also a former assistant general secretary for the JCTU for many years, Ennis added, “His unwavering commitment to improving the lives of workers across Jamaica and his determination to ensure equity and fairness have left an indelible mark on the labour movement, trade union fraternity and our nation.”

“Throughout his tenure, Keith displayed an exceptional sense of duty, profound leadership, and an unyielding resolve to advance the cause of the working class. He was not just a union leader but a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light to many. His voice resonated far and wide, inspiring solidarity and collective action, and his legacy will continue to shape the labour movement for generations to come.

“On behalf of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, we extend heartfelt condolences to Keith’s family, friends, colleagues, and the members of the USAAW. As we mourn this tremendous loss, let us honour his memory by continuing the work to which he devoted his life. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the JCTU president said.
