Cocktails With – NICKEISHA WALSH

Executive Director Students’ Loan Bureau

Style Observer (SO): Which five words best describe you?

Nickeisha Walsh (NW): Empathetic, observant, analytical, strategic, and authentic — with just the right touch of style.

SO: What are some common misconceptions about the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB)?

NW: Misconception 1: SLB loans have high interest rates.

Reality: SLB offers some of the most affordable interest rates in the market.

•Rates range from 6 per cent to 9.5 per cent, depending on the loan product.

•Students maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher receive a 2 per cent interest rate reduction.

•Borrowers whose parents work in the public sector are eligible for a 1 per cent interest rate discount.

•Students in STEM programmes benefit from the lowest rate at 6 per cent.

•All loans are unsecured, and no guarantor is required — a major step forward in accessibility.

Misconception 2: It’s hard to repay an SLB loan.

Reality: Repayment requires discipline, but we’ve implemented several features to make it manageable:

•Extended repayment terms—up to 20 years for some products

•A generous 14-month grace period post-graduation

•Reducing balance method for calculating interest — meaning monthly payments decrease over time

Misconception 3: It’s better to avoid SLB loans altogether.

Reality: Education is one of the best investments you can make in yourself. SLB is here to make that journey possible, especially for those who can’t afford tuition upfront.

Our “study now, pay later” model allows students to pursue their studies without immediate financial stress.

SLB isn’t a burden — it’s a bridge to opportunity, empowerment, and a better future.

SO: What’s new and different about the Students’ Loan Bureau?

NW: Rebranding & New Identity:

We’ve introduced a fresh, modern brand identity focused on support, access, trust, and empowerment. Our new logo symbolises both stacked books and open hands — a visual reminder of our role in providing knowledge and partnership.

•Relocation to 86 Hope Road:

Our new, modern office space is designed to enhance the in-person customer experience with improved accessibility, efficiency, and a welcoming atmosphere. This move also signals our commitment to continued transformation and service excellence.

•Enhanced Digital Services:

The second phase of our online loan management platform launches by year-end. Borrowers will be able to:

o View real-time loan balances

o Access due dates

o Download digital statements — all from their preferred device.

SO: What advice would you share with students who want to pursue higher education but cannot self-fund?

NW: Apply today at
www.slbja.com.

Investing in your education is one of the most empowering choices you can make. The SLB application process is simple, our loans are affordable, and we offer a variety of benefits and incentives to support your success. Let your financial situation be a reason to apply — not a reason to pause your dreams.

SO: What are your thoughts on AI?

NW: AI is an incredibly powerful tool that can reshape how we live, learn, and work. Automating repetitive tasks allows us to focus on innovation, strategic thinking, and meaningful human engagement.

However, it’s not without its risks. Ethical use, data privacy, and responsible implementation must remain top priorities. This is why investing in education is critical — so we can approach AI with the knowledge, skills, and awareness needed to use it wisely and thrive in a tech-driven future.

SO: Share with us a few of your creature comforts.

NW: A cosy space, my journal — and maybe soft music in the background. That’s my kind of creative escape.

SO: How do you relax after a stressful week?

NW: I’ll admit — I’m a foodie! Dinner (whether solo or with friends) is always a favourite way to unwind. Add in great conversation or a good movie, and I’m content. On Sundays, I attend church, which is essential for me — it grounds me, refreshes my spirit, and helps me reset for the week ahead.

SO: An evening in or out?

NW: I genuinely enjoy both, but most times, a cosy evening in wins.

SO: What’s your preference: A good book or a rom-com?

NW: Honestly, it depends on my mood! I start each day with my
Bible, but outside of that, I enjoy business and personal development books — but I also can’t resist a heartwarming romantic movie.

SO: Room service or reservations at a restaurant?

NW: Definitely restaurant reservations. I enjoy the full experience — the ambience, the food, and the social connection.

SO: And what are you drinking?

NW: An Appleton Golden Mojita

SO: Share with us a few of the most memorable countries you’ve visited.

NW: Outside of the United States, which I visit often, I’ve truly enjoyed exploring Canada, St Lucia, and the Dominican Republic — each one offered something unique and memorable.

SO: What are your travel essentials?

NW: My skincare bag, a crisp white blazer, my signature scent (J’adore by Dior), a good pair of loafers, and of course — a great book.

SO: What are your preferred fashion labels?

NW: I gravitate toward timeless, classy, and comfortable pieces. My go-to brands include Tory Burch, Zara, Ann Taylor, Coach, and Express. I also love tailored clothing — and no outfit is complete without the right accessories.

SO: Lipstick or lip gloss?

NW: Definitely a lip gloss girl! You’ll find them everywhere — my car, purse, office desk. My current favourite is Mauve Wives by Fenty Beauty.

SO: Finally, what’s your personal credo?

NW: Authentic… Purpose…Heart.

I believe in showing up as my full, honest self — in leadership, in relationships, and in every space I occupy. Authenticity isn’t just a value I hold; it’s the lens through which I make decisions, build connections, and pursue impact.

For me, success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about lifting others as I grow. I strive to be intentional in my growth, anchored in faith, and unwavering in my commitment to excellence.
