Businessman charged for allegedly obstructing election officer

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A St Mary businessman has been charged in connection with an incident during the recent general election in the St Mary South Eastern constituency.

Forty-seven-year-old Leon Campbell, otherwise called “Poogie,” of Addison Close, Gibraltar Housing Scheme, was charged with use of a computer for malicious communication and obstruction of election officer, in breach of the Representation of the People Act, following the incident on Thursday, September 4.

According to reports from the Annotto Bay police, at 12:00 pm, Campbell entered the grounds of a primary school being used as a polling station and used his cellphone to record the presiding officer and other election workers.

In the video, Campbell reportedly stated, “People see Dunn and him friend dem a try thief up the election.”

The utterance allegedly left the electoral workers feeling harassed, intimidated, and uncomfortable.

Campbell later reportedly uploaded the video to his social media page.

The post allegedly caused significant distress among the electoral workers, who felt their safety was compromised due to the political nature of the comments. The video’s circulation online reportedly left the workers feeling vulnerable and fearful of potential harm.

On Monday, October 13, Campbell was arrested and charged. He was offered bail in the sum of $150,000 and is scheduled to appear in the Annotto Bay Parish Court on October 28 at 10:00 am.
