Jamaica-bound hurricane relief container robbed in Canada

TORONTO, Canada — Canadian police are investigating what volunteers say is a heartbreaking robbery after thieves emptied out a container of donated items destined for Jamaica.

Volunteer Michael Bennett told CTV news that donations were collected over three weeks and included food items, clothing and even generators worth between CA$300,000 to CA$400,000.

The volunteers explained to CTV that when they arrived at the Toronto storage unit on Wednesday morning to load the goods into a truck, the padlock had been cut and everything taken.

The report cited local police who suspect the theft occurred overnight, while Bennett said security footage showed a truck breaking through a locked gate at the container facility and emptying the unit.

Bennett, who fought back tears during the interview with CTV, said the robbery was hard to take.

“It doesn’t matter about the stuff and all those things. The food is even more important than some of the other stuff that’s there, you know what I mean? What are they going to do with it here? Absolutely nothing, man. Absolutely nothing,” he said.
