JCF to enforce strict safety rules for National Carnival weekend
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has issued a public advisory outlining safety and traffic measures for the staging of National Carnival 2026, set to take place over the weekend of April 11–12.
The annual festivities will begin with J’ouvert celebrations on Saturday, followed by the highly anticipated Road March on Sunday, both expected to attract large numbers of revellers and spectators across the Corporate Area.
In preparation, the police say a series of traffic management strategies and restrictions will be implemented to ensure the safe and orderly flow of events.
Authorities have confirmed that several key routes will be cordoned off to accommodate parade movements. Motorists are being urged to avoid designated parade routes and make use of alternative roadways, as delays are anticipated throughout the weekend.
Parking will be strictly prohibited along all parade routes, with officials warning that any unattended vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. The JCF also noted that surrounding roadways will be closely monitored to prevent obstructions that could disrupt traffic flow or emergency access.
The advisory further highlights a number of prohibited activities aimed at safeguarding public order. Among them is the ban on the distribution of free items along parade routes, a measure police say is necessary to prevent dangerous crowd surges that could lead to injuries or fatalities.
Additionally, unauthorised sound systems will not be permitted along the route, as they may interfere with the official flow of the event.
The JCF has also reinforced its zero-tolerance stance on unauthorised vehicles within the parade space. Motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and pedal bicycles will not be allowed to participate in the festivities.
Police have warned that any such vehicles found within or near the parade will be seized, and operators may face legal charges. Stunt riding or any other dangerous activity is also strictly prohibited.
The JCF is urging full cooperation from the public, emphasising that adherence to the guidelines and compliance with instructions from officers on duty will be critical to ensuring a safe and enjoyable Carnival experience for all.
