JFF unveils women’s football strategy, eyes $41.7 million in FIFA funding
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) could secure more than $40 million in FIFA funding to drive the expansion and execution of key women’s football programmes islandwide.
The JFF, in partnership with FIFA, launched its women’s strategy on Monday at the Jaguar Showroom in Kingston, outlining several key objectives to be achieved over the next five years.
The strategy focuses on seven major pillars, including national teams, grassroots development, governance and leadership.
FIFA consultant Andres Portabella says the development of the strategy has opened the door for the JFF to access funding of over US $265,000 ($41.7 million) from the world’s governing body to help achieve its targets.
Carlene Edwards, chairperson of the JFF Projects Committee for Women’s Programmes, says the federation aims to increase registered female players by 50 per cent by 2031, while developing more than 200 licensed female coaches and over 100 women’s referees.
The JFF is preparing to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Kingston as well as qualifying the senior women’s team for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
