Trinidadian cop expected to be charged with murder in police station attack
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Wednesday said that a 28-year-old municipal police officer is expected to be charged with the murder of acting Corporal Anusha Eversley as investigations continue into last Sunday’s assault on a police station that left one officer dead and guns and ammunition stolen.
In a statement, the TTPS said that charges of robbery with violence, trafficking of firearms and possession of ammunition, are also expected to be laid against the officer, following advice received from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC.
“The swift and meticulous work of our investigators reflects the standard of professionalism the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service demands of itself,” said Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro.
“Their decisive action brings us closer to justice for the family and colleagues of acting Corporal of Police Eversley, and for a nation traumatised by this deeply troubling act of betrayal.
“The lure of greed and quick money can never justify the betrayal of public trust. Whether you serve as Estate Police, Transit Police, Municipal Police, Special Reserve Police or Regular Police, our oath binds us to a higher duty.
“For those who choose corruption and criminality, we will leave no stone unturned to remove you from among the officers who risk their lives daily to protect our citizens, and place you instead, among those who enjoy state provided accommodation with reinforced burglar proofing and 24 hour security. The TTPS remains resolute in defending the integrity of the badge,” Guevarro added.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Minister, Roger Alexander, says 10 people including a 16-year-old have been detained by police as the probe continues.
The authorities have declared the incident a “security breach” and Alexander, answering Opposition questions in the Senate on Tuesday, said that the police have been working around the clock in seeking to solve the matter.

He told legislators that he can confirm that 10 men, ages 16 to 33, are currently in police custody and that some of the missing weapons and ammunition have been found.
“We have made significant progress in the recovery of the stolen hardware, including one MPX submachine gun, four shotguns, one revolver and 39 pistols. That includes also, Mr President, 900 rounds of ammunition, also 39 pistol magazines and one MPX magazine.
“While the investigation is at a sensitive stage and we await the direction of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Commission of Police is already implementing drastic immediate institutional changes.”
Alexander said that these include strict new accountability protocols for firearm storage security “to ensure such a breach never happens again”.
Alexander also assured the Senate that the assault on the municipal precinct was and remains a top priority, saying that “all the members of the national security apparatus are presently engaged at this time in order to bring closure to this situation as soon as humanly possible”.
Alexander also told the Senate that the police are fully engaged in last Sunday’s quadruple murders in Morvant on the outskirts, which left eight-year-old J’layna Armstrong among the victims as gunmen fired upon a vehicle in which they were travelling.
“We are maintaining peace through active intelligence-led patrols and heightened surveillance within the community,” Alexander said, adding that the police have detained several people and that to specifically address the risk of reprisal, specialised units have been deployed to the area.
