Seville breaks meet record to win men’s 100m in Poland Diamond League

KINGSTON, Jamaica — World Championships gold medallist Oblique Seville ran a meeting record of 9.83 seconds (1.4m/s) to win the men’s 100m on Sunday’s Wanda Diamond League meeting, the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia, Poland, his first visit to the European country.

It was an immediate response from the Jamaican after being beaten at the London Diamond League as he broke the meeting record of 9.87 seconds that was held jointly by three men, including compatriot Kishane Thompson.

Seville had made his intentions clear after he had won his first round heat in 9.90 seconds (1.9m/s) as two Americans finished behind him, with Kenneth Bednarek running a season’s best 9.87 seconds for second and Christian Coleman third in 9.93 seconds.

Brianna Lyston was the best placed Jamaican in the women’s 100m, placing fourth in 10.96 seconds (0.6m/s) while American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden maintained her unbeaten run all year to win with a season best equalling 10.78 seconds, beating Olympic champion Julien Alfred, who ran a season’s best 10.83 seconds, with another American, Sha’Carri Richardson, third with 10.96 seconds.

Tina Clayton, who had a good start, faded to sixth place with 11.01 seconds, and her twin sister Tia was ninth with 11.24 seconds.

Megan Simmonds was second in the 100m hurdles, running 12.62 seconds (0.2m/s), behind American Alaysha Johnson, who won with 12.52 seconds, with Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska placing third with 12.64 seconds.

Ackera Nugent, who had raced in Finland four days earlier, was fourth with 12.64 seconds, with two-time World Champion Danielle Williams placing fifth in 12.70 seconds.

Nickisha Pryce ran a season’s best 49.49 seconds for second in the women’s 400m as World Champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic ran 48.87 seconds to win for the fifth straight time on the Diamond League circuit.

Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain finished third with a season’s best 49.57 seconds as Stacey Ann Williams was sixth with 49.81 seconds.

Three days after he competed in Lausanne, Orlando Bennett was fifth in the 110m hurdles in 13.25 seconds (-0.7m/s) as American Ja’Kobe Tharpe, who had finished at the back of the race in Switzerland, rebounded to win with 13.05 seconds in a clean sweep of the top three for Americans. Trey Cunningham was second with 13.08 seconds, just ahead of Jamal Britt in 13.09 seconds.

Rajindra Campbell was sixth in the men’s shot put with 21.61m as Italy’s world leader Leonardo Fabbri won in dramatic fashion, coming from fourth place with 22.08m in the fourth round.

Early leader Jordan Geist of the USA was second with 21.96m and Joe Kovacs, also of the USA, was third with 21.86m.

Olympic Games champion Roje Stona was sixth in the men’s discus throw with 67.65m and national champion Ralford Mullings threw a season’s best 66.44m for seventh after starting with two foul throws.

Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania set a Diamond League and meet record of 72.58m to beat Kristjan Ceh of Slovakia 68.93m and Daniel Stahl of Sweden 68.25m.

Commonwealth Games medallist Ackelia Smith finished eighth in the women’s triple jump with 13.97m (-0.7m/s) as Saly Sarr won with a Senegalese national record 15.08m (0.2m/s) to beat Leyanis Perez Hernandez— 14.91m (-0.2m/s) and Davisleydi Velazco—14.84m (1.2m/s), both of Cuba.

Lamara Distin was ninth in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.89m as Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine equalled the meeting record 2.00m to win, beating her compatriot Iryna Geraschenko— 1.98m with Commonwealth champion Eleanor Patterson of Australia third with 1.98m.
