Shaneil Muir steps into new season

Entertainer finds her freedom, unlocks chart success

MUSICAL maturity has the ability to unlock a certain kind of confidence, one that arrives quietly and doesn’t need a grand announcement.

It comes after the lessons, the setbacks, and the moments spent pushing back against doubt and fear, into a new season marked by resilience.

For dancehall artiste Shaneil Muir that confidence is beginning to reverberate through her music, with her recent songs finding renewed life across social media and her name appearing prominently in YouTube’s local rankings.

Muir is enjoying one of the most compelling runs of her career. But while the numbers offer tangible evidence of her current momentum, she believes the real story is happening beneath them.

“I’ve had successful records before, and I’ve experienced moments when the music was everywhere, but this feels like a new chapter,” she told the Jamaica Observer.

“I think the biggest difference is where I am mentally and creatively. I’m not chasing a moment; I’m making music from a place that feels true to who I am right now.” That difference is perhaps most evident in the freedom she has allowed herself in the creative process.

For an artiste who has always demonstrated versatility, Muir said she has reached a point at which she is no longer concerned with fitting neatly into people’s expectations.

Instead, she has settled into a clearer understanding of who she is, both personally and creatively.

“I think I stopped overthinking what Shaneil Muir is ‘supposed’ to sound like and started trusting what I feel,” she said. “I’ve always been versatile, but lately I’ve been allowing myself to create without putting too many rules around it.

I’m paying attention to what feels authentic, what I actually want to say and how I want to say it.” For Muir, there is liberation in that admission.

After years of navigating an industry that can be quick to define its artistes, she says she has learnt that music carries a different purpose once one “gets back to enjoying the process instead of trying to satisfy expectations”.

Muir recently stood as the only female artiste among Jamaica’s YouTube top 15 entertainers over a three-month period, while also becoming the only female artiste with two songs in the island’s top 20 during that same period.

For her, however, the significance extends beyond seeing her name on a chart. “I’m proud of myself as an artiste, but I’m also proud to represent women in the space,” she said.

“I hope seeing me there also encourages another female artiste to know that there is space for her too.” Still, Muir is careful not to frame her achievements solely through the lens of being a woman competing in a male-dominated industry.

And she is hopeful her success will be judged on its own merit, not in comparison to where it lines up against that of her male counterparts.

“I don’t go into the studio thinking, ‘I have to compete with the men.’ I’m competing with myself and trying to make better music every time,” she said.

“One song can catch fire for so many different reasons, but when people are connecting with multiple songs, it tells me they’re paying attention to the artiste and not just one record.” Muir does not want audiences waiting years for the next Shaneil Muir song to arrive.

She wants them invested in the artiste behind the records. And if longevity is the immediate goal, legacy is the larger prize. Muir shared that each version of herself thus far has shaped where she’s headed in the music industry.

She told the Jamaica Observer that she’s hungry for even more success and is now more aware of exactly how and when to move in pursuit of it. “I’m a more evolved and unrestricted Shaneil,” she shared.

“The hunger is still there, but now it comes with wisdom. I don’t have to prove myself in every room; I have to continue building what belongs to me.

“I understand the business better, I understand people better, and most importantly, I understand myself better. I’ve learned when to speak, when to move, when to be patient, and when to trust my instincts,” she added.

Her current success appears to be the place where external recognition is finally catching up with an evolution that has been taking place within. Muir says she’s ready to unleash even more, insisting that there are still layers to her that her fans have yet to witness and that her next chapters will be even better.

“I’ve learned that a career isn’t one straight line upward. Sometimes you have to go through seasons that stretch you before you understand what they were preparing you for,” she said.

“I’m still hungry, I’m still evolving, and I genuinely feel like there’s so much more of Shaneil Muir that people haven’t seen yet.”
