Trench Town Psalms ‘exceeds expectations’

Synonymous with the roots-reggae movement that erupted in Jamaica during the late 1960s, Trench Town has opened its arms to gospel music in recent years.

On October 4, the community hosted Trench Town Psalms, a concert at Praise City International Transformation Centre. Singers Carlene Davis, Bovia and Sister Sandy, along with Poetess Erika, shared the stage with virtuoso musicians Jon Williams, David Rushton, and Kenroy Mullings.

According to lead organiser Fitzroy “Dave Prime Time” Green, their performances were healing for the soul.

“I am extremely pleased and deeply encouraged by the response to Trench Town Psalms. The event exceeded our expectations,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

“The church was filled to capacity, and there were so many people in attendance that some had to stand outside, just to listen and be part of the experience.

The atmosphere was powerful, uplifting, and filled with a genuine sense of community.” Green was born in Trelawny but spent most of his youth in the Kingston 13 region which includes Trench Town.

Inspired by the greats Trench Town produced, such as The Wailers and Alton Ellis, he followed their path into music. Currently, Green is managing director at JaMIN Studio, a recording facility in Trench Town that provides training for aspiring musicians and engineers.

He has also participated in previous gospel shows in the community. Those events, Green stressed, have helped ease tension in an area long associated with gang violence.

“The response says something very powerful about Trench Town. It shows that the community has a deep appreciation for music, faith, culture, and positive entertainment,” he said.

“Trench Town is internationally recognised for its extraordinary musical legacy, and the turnout for Trench Town Psalms proved that this creative and cultural spirit is still very much alive.” As a drummer, Green recorded or performed on stage with Carlene Davis, Papa San, Lieutenant Stitchie.

Trench Town Psalms is also the title of his first book, scheduled for release in early 2027.
