Desmond’s to be honoured

Desmond’s to be honoured

Comedy that helped change Britain to be given permanent plaque

LONDON, England — One of Britain’s most influential television comedies will on Saturday be celebrated with the unveiling of a Nubian Jak blue plaque honouring Desmond’s, the ground-breaking Channel 4 sitcom that brought black British and Caribbean life, humour, and culture into millions of homes across the UK.

Created by Trix Worrell and starring the unforgettable Norman Beaton — who died in December 1994 — and Carmen Munroe, Desmond’s broke new ground when it arrived on television in 1989.

Set in a Peckham barbershop, the series brought together generations, cultures, and communities through unforgettable characters.

More than a sitcom, Desmond’s helped reshape how black people were represented on British television. It brought Caribbean culture and the realities of multicultural Britain into the mainstream; making audiences laugh while challenging stereotypes and bringing communities closer together.

Its barbershop became an iconic meeting place where cultures collided, generations debated, and everyday life provided comedy that audiences across Britain could recognise and enjoy.

The idea for the plaque was brought to the Nubian Jak Community Trust by a young Birmingham-based English fan of the show, who grew up watching repeats of Desmond’s with his father. What began as a personal connection to a much-loved comedy has become a tribute to a programme whose influence reached far beyond the screen.

Aron Shabir, inspiration behind the Desmond’s plaque, said: “Desmond’s holds a special place in my heart, with fond memories of watching it with my father. Starting this campaign has shown me how much the programme still means to so many people. This plaque will preserve its history, celebrate the people who made it special and ensure its legacy is remembered by future generations.”

The Desmond’s plaque will celebrate the cast, creators and cultural legacy of a series that helped broaden British television. It will also bring UK Black History Month 2026 (October) to a close.

Dame Carmen Munroe, who played the character Shirley (Desmond’s wife), said: “…I am proud to have been part of a series that reflected the lives, humour, and experiences of ordinary people… What made Desmond’s special was its honesty, warmth, and ability to bring audiences together through laughter. I am delighted that this lasting tribute will celebrate the cast and creators, and the important place the series holds in British television history.”

Dr Jak Beula, founder and CEO of Nubian Jak Community Trust, said: “The trust is delighted to honour and remember the casts of Desmond’s 35 years after they first appeared on our TV screens. The plaque is also of personal satisfaction to me having met Norman Beaton in my teenage years. He made me promise that we would meet up again one day when I was an adult and had made something of my life. We had no way of knowing the occasion would be on his birthday, and as a tribute to his most successful TV series.”

Jeremy Lester Beaton, son of (Desmond) Norman Beaton, said: “My brother and I are honoured that the
Desmond’s series is being honoured in this way… I’m sure dad is smiling wherever he is, with a cigar and raising a glass to the plaque.”

Robbie Gee who played the character Lee Stanley, said: “1988.. I was cast as Lee Stanley…working with my idols, Norman Beaton, Carmen Monroe, Ram John Holder, and Christopher Asante… pioneer’s in the acting world… To this day I am beyond grateful and still cherish every moment, every experience, every lesson that I learnt from them…”

The noon event is set for 204 Bellenden Road, Peckham, London.
