11 firearms seized since the start of the year
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting continued success in the ‘Get the Guns’ campaign with the seizure of two firearms in separate incidents in Kingston and St Catherine over the last 24- hours. This brings the number of firearm seized since the start of 2016 to eleven — ten pistols and one rifle.
In the first incident, the Denham Town Police seized a browning 9mm semi-automatic pistol along with six 9mm rounds of ammunition at the intersection of Rose Lane and North Street in Kingston on Tuesday, January 5.
Reports from the police are that a team of officers was on patrol between 6:30 pm, and 7:30 pm, when an open lot was searched and the weapon found. No one was arrested in connection with the find.
The second incident occurred at Cave Hill in Portmore, St Catherine. Reports garnered by the JCF’s Corporate Communications Unit are that a team of officers was conducting a vehicular check point operation when the driver of a Toyota motor vehicle was signalled to stop. The occupants of the vehicle were searched and a 9mm pistol along with a magazine containing 15 rounds was seized.
The occupants of the motor vehicle were taken into custody for questioning. Charges will be proffered at a later date, the police said.
In the meantime, individuals with information that can lead to seizure of illegal firearms and ammunition or the arrest of those who breach the Firearms Act are being asked to call the Police 119 emergency number, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) at 811 or the nearest police station.
