3 nabbed in praedial larceny operation
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – The police are reporting that as part of intensified efforts, the Praedial Larceny Prevention Unit (PLPU) arrested three people during operations in St Elizabeth and Clarendon last week.
Vehicular check points were established and several motor vehicles that were transporting livestock and other agricultural produce were reportedly searched.
The police say the operations resulted in two people being taken into custody for breaches of the Agricultural Produce Act and one for larceny of cattle.
In addition, 12 heads of cattle were recovered in St Elizabeth and the PLPU is appealing to anyone whose cattle were recently stolen to contact the Black River police at 965-2332 with the relevant documentation.
The PLPU is also reminding the public about Section 14 of the Agricultural Produce Act, which makes it an offence for anyone to carry agricultural produce without a receipt issued by the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS).
The police say they have taken a zero-tolerance approach to this offence and that it attracts a fine of up to J$250,000. The PLPU has also reminded farmers to register with the JAS and obtain the required receipt book.
