4 remain missing after boat overturns in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic are searching for four people missing since a tourist boat overturned along the country’s north-east coast.

Navy spokesman Arsenio Maldonado says the search resumed Tuesday after it was temporarily suspended the day before because of rough surf caused by a weather disturbance that is now Tropical Storm Earl.

A total of nine people were on the boat that overturned Sunday, all of them Dominicans. Officials said the captain and one other person swam to shore, while the bodies of three people were found Monday.

Police have detained the captain as they investigate the incident. Officials said they had ordered small boats to remain in port because of the storm, which is blamed for causing six other unrelated deaths in the Dominican Republic.
