BCJ approval necessary before RJR/Gleaner merger finalised
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica (BCJ) says it has noted the announcement of a plan for the merger of the media assets of Radio Jamaica Limited and the Gleaner Company Limited.
A media release from BCJ Wednesday said that while the commission is not empowered to address the print media aspects of the deal, the electronic media implications will arise for regulatory review as the contracting parties had indicated.
Both entities or their subsidiaries operate electronic media outlets.
This is in keeping with the legal requirement that mergers of electronic media entities be reported to the commission and its approval sought before arrangements are finalised, the release said.
