NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) – The Bahamas is celebrating its 42nd anniversary of political independence from Britain with Prime Minister Perry Christie urging nations to continue the task of nation building and placing much emphasis on the young people of the country.

In a message to mark the occasion, Christie said that he also wanted to reflect on the “heroic struggles and sacrifices of the men and women who committed themselves to the ideals of Independence and made it a reality.

“It is also worth reflecting on the “post-independence” generation, those citizens who have lived in a free and independent nation over the course of the past 42 years and who by their exemplary commitment to the common good have given renewed meaning to the ideals of Independence and national sovereignty.”

But he told citizens that 42 years after lowering the Union Jack here, it is important to ensure that the new generation commits itself to the future socio-economic development of the country.

“In doing so, we inevitably ask what our country will be like in 42 years from now. Hopefully, it will still be a nation committed to the virtues of tolerance and mutual respect of our diversity; a nation of patriotic pride and common endeavour; and above, a nation still striving to become the best little country in the world.

“Whether such hopes are realized will depend on how well Bahamians, especially our youth, remain committed to the timeless values of hard work, loyalty to country, and respect for one another. This is not a task that can be assigned to our educational system alone. It must be led by parents, by guardians and mentors, by religious and community leaders.”

Prime Minister Christie reminded citizens that there is no one else in the world who can build the country.

“We must do it ourselves. That’s what Independence is all about. That’s what mastering our own destiny really means.”

Meanwhile, the United States says it values the relationship with Nassau, adding “our broad deep relationship allows us to celebrate the strong historic and cultural ties between our nations and to demonstrate the benefits of democracy for others”.

US Secretary of State, John Kerry, said that Washington would remain “a committed partner in working together to build a safer and more prosperous Bahamas. 

“We look forward to continued collaboration, reflective of our shared values, in the areas of citizen security, energy security, education, and the holistic development of young people,” Kerry added.

The celebrations here include the traditional military parade and the honouring of several citizens.
