Carjacker escapes police custody after killing cabbie
ST JAMES, Jamaica – One of two men who shot and killed a St James cabbie they carjacked, was shot and injured during a confrontation with a brave plain clothes policeman who was on his way to work today along the Ironshore main road in St James.
An illegal revolver was also reportedly recovered by the valiant cop.
Meanwhile, the police later released the identity of the dead taxi operator as 62-year-old Kenneth Taylor, who lived in Glendevon, St James.
Reports are that shortly after 6:00 am, a policeman was in traffic along the Ironshore main road when two men shot Taylor after they dragged him from his cab, which was seen parked in the middle of the roadway.
The cop shot one of the two carjackers who he challenged, but one sped away from the scene in Taylor’s motor car.
However, he did not get very far before he lost control of the motor vehicle, which crashed into a wall at Coral Gardens.
According to a usually reliable OBSERVER ONLINE police source, the carjacker who crashed the vehicle managed to escape from the Coral Gardens Police Station where he was taken after the accident.
He was said to have escaped after he went to use the bathroom.
Meanwhile, his wounded accomplice has been admitted in hospital under police guard.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has commenced a probe into the incident.
