Ceremonial opening of Parliament for April 14
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The ceremonial opening of Parliament for the 2016/17 session at Gordon House is scheduled for April 14.
Minister of Education, Information and Youth, Senator Ruel Reid, made the announcement at this morning’s first Jamaica House post cabinet press briefing for the new Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) government.
The ceremonial opening of Parliament, which takes place at 11:00 am, signals the start of the new parliamentary year, and features a parade by a guard-of-honour formed by members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Mounted Police, followed by a sitting of the House of Representatives, at which the budget for the new financial year is tabled.
Senator Reid also announced that a resolution for a $83 billion carry-on allowance for the new government, which will cover the government’s spending until the 2016/17 budget takes effect, will be tabled when the House meets next week Tuesday at Gordon House.
