Constable Devon Cooper who has been charged with last week’s murder of a primary school teacher, was granted bail in the sum of $1 million with one or two sureties by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court this week.
As a condition of his bail, he is to surrender his travel documents and report to the May Pen Police Station on Mondays and Thursdays.
Cooper, who was assigned to the May Pen Police Station in Clarendon, is charged with the February 7 death of Steven Dyer.
The Independent Commission of Investigations reported that Dyer was allegedly shot and injured by Constable Cooper after an altercation in the Bushy Park Housing Scheme in Clarendon on February 6.
Dyer was transported to the May Pen Hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.
He was later transferred to the University Hospital of the West Indies where he succumbed to his injuries.
Cooper was subsequently taken into custody and was charged on February 12.
A March 3 mention date was set for the matter to be transferred to the May Pen Resident Magistrate’s Court.
