Cops deny calling lawyers about investigations against them
KINGSTON, Jamaica– It has come to the attention of the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigations Branch (C-TOC) that unscrupulous people purporting to be police officers attached to C-TOC’S Fraud Squad are making phone calls to members of the legal profession, advising them that their names appear on a list of attorneys-at-law that are being investigated by the squad.
The callers are reported to have informed lawyers that the cases are in relation to land transactions and other matters involving large sums of money.
“The unscrupulous persons are suggesting that they can assist the attorneys-at-law to have the investigations disappear,” C-TOC said Thursday. “This is an attempt at scamming or an act of extortion.”
The police have advised members of the legal profession and the public in general that these phone calls do not originate in the Fraud Squad, insisting that C-TOC and the police are in no way associated with this attempted scam or extortion.
They are encouraging all attorneys who have been affected by this “unscrupulous” act, to immediately report it to the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigations Branch at 967-5627, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.
