Final report on bad gas to be released soon
KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – Minister of Energy, Science and Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, says the final report from an investigation into contaminated gas discovered at several service stations last year, is complete and will be released soon.
Dr Wheatley made the disclosure during a keynote address at the half yearly meeting of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA), held at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, today.
He commended the Petroleum Trade Reform Committee for their thoroughness in the preparation, investigation and finalization of the report.
Based on samples of E10 90 and E10 87 fuel from service stations across the island between December 22 and 24, 2015, 17 stations were discovered to possess a contaminant known as gum and were ordered to close their pumps.
Dr Wheatley said the Ministry will be seeking to address the regulation, oversight and monitoring of the petroleum sector, including the granting and renewal of licences. He further noted that there will be a legislative overhaul of the sector to address gaps.
“Our team at the Ministry is committed to doing everything in our powers to build integrity and restore trust and confidence within the petroleum market,” he added.
The minister said the JGRA and all stakeholders will be expected, going forward, to play a role in ensuring security of the local gasoline trade. He noted that there needs to be partnership for the tracking of the custody of the product at all stages, to ensure its integrity.
“(I) challenge you to raise the bar of excellence in customer service, business operations, ethical practices and care for safety and the environment, to secure your own longevity,” Dr Wheatley said.
The minister further committed to partnering with the Association to find solutions to challenges faced by the sector, including high operational costs, illegal competition and predatory pricing.
The JGRA meeting was attended by gas retailers and industry stakeholders. The petroleum sector in Jamaica consists of 18 marketing companies and 295 service stations.
