Illegally imported cigarettes seized by Customs
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Fifty master cases of uncustomed “Win” cigarettes with an estimated street value of J$10M were seized by the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team in collaboration with the Trans-national Crime and Narcotics Division (TNCD) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force on Thursday.
The operation, which occurred at approximately 9:34 am, resulted in the seizure of the cigarettes and a silver Toyota Hiace Motor Vehicle used to transport the contraband.
The vehicle was intercepted in the Greenwich Farm Area.
One person has been detained for questioning.
This seizure of illicit cigarettes comes on the heels of another major investigation of the smuggling of duty free cigarettes – with a street value in excess of J$1M- at one of the International Airports.
Investigations in both cases are ongoing.
The Jamaica Customs Agency is advising wholesalers and retailers of tobacco products that they should only purchase from legitimate sources and have their proof of purchase at hand to present upon request by the agency at all times.
