Man killed in alleged shootout with police

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth –The St Elizabeth police are reporting that a man who is yet to be identified was killed in a gun battle with lawmen on the Burnt Savannah main road, a few miles west of here on Tuesday night.

The police say a Thompson submachine gun was found at the scene.

Police reports are that at about 8:10 pm a police operational support team was involved in vehicular check point duties when a white Toyota Townace mini bus was intercepted.

Men allegedly alighted from the vehicle and started shooting at the police. The gunfire was returned and when the shooting subsided a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound. The sub machine gun was beside him.

Police say he was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 9:05pm.
