Massive hunt for suspected Tredegar gunmen

Dogs sniffing for suspects, guns and drugs

A massive police/miliary operation was launched in the vicinity of the Ferry police station this morning in search of 15 men believed to be involved in the massacre of eight person killed in the Tredegar Park community in Spanish Town, St Catherine before dawn this morning.

“We received information that the men from Tredegar Park were fleeing the area and we have full description of them, and so that has helped to trigger this operation,” Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, who headed the operation said. “We understand that it is about 15 men.”

While the operation was not successful in capturing the men, Lewis said the operation, which started at 7:00 am and lasted for well over four hours, yielded results.

“We have been here from 7:00 am searching for drugs, guns and wanted men,”  Lewis explained. “We have so far found 10 pounds of ganja, taken off 30 plates for motor vehicle defects, siezed and impounded 10 vehicles for breaches of the transport and road traffic act, made 20 arrest on warrants to persons who did not appear in court and not honouring their tickets, and arrested two persons for drugs,” he said.

The two locally trained sniffer dogs, Ben, trained in the detection of guns and Tigger, in the detection of drugs, are central to the operation.

“We want criminals to know that we are leaving no stone unturned in our quest and these dogs will be used to locate the guns and drugs wherever it is hidden,” he said.

The joint operation involved 50 persons from the Island Traffic Authority, Island Special Constabulary Force, the Canine Division, the Flying Squad and the Narcotics Division.

“We will be moving from here to Spanish Town and the Corporate Area before the day is done,” Lewis said. “As you can see this is an all inclusive operation, and we are working in sync with what the commissioner said in a press conference recently, that we are not only involved in traffic enforcement but also anti-crime operations.”

He said the operation will be a daily one and will see the Corporate area and St Catherine South feeling the effects.

“If needs be, will move to the rural areas,” he warned.

Police this morning confirmed that a total of eight persons – five men and three women – were murdered in Tredegar Park during an attack by gunmen about 1:00 am.

Police say they shot dead two of the alleged perpetrators in the nearby community known as ‘Brooklyn’.

The following men have been named by the police as persons of interest:
