More time for detainees
KEIFA O’Gilvie, son of Justin O’Gilvie, the reputed right hand man and business associate of Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, is to be served with a detention order today, which will prolong his detention in police custody.Related story:
The younger O’Gilvie, who has been in custody since May 24, is being held under the Emergency Powers Act which is being enforced as part of the State of Emergency.
Last Friday, O’Gilvie’s attorney, Christian Tavares-Finson, made a habeas-corpus application in court asking for the release of his client.
He argued that the police had failed to give an indication why they have detained his client for so long and that he was being held under the power of the State of Emergency.
Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams had then instructed the arresting officer to inform the court yesterday as to their plans as it relates to O’Gilvie. As result the court was yesterday informed by the arresting officer that O’Gilvie would be served with the document today.
However, Tavares-Finson told the court that he would be renewing his application on Friday if his client was not served with the document.
Meanwhile, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey is to make a decision today as to whether or not she has the power to release reputed Clansman boss Tesha Miller, who is also being held under the power of the State of Emergency.
The decision which was scheduled for yesterday was delayed for today.
Miller surrendered to the police on May 31 after the police released a list of alleged gang leaders and members from various communities in the Corporate Area and St Catherine.
