NSWMA implements night garbage collection for festive season
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says it will be implementing additional measures to ensure that this Christmas is the cleanest ever for solid waste management.
In a news release Monday, the NSWMA said it is fully committed to making “timely and full” garbage collection, through its regional offices, during this festive season.
For the period December 20, 2016 to January 2, 2017, NSWMA said it will contract 20 additional units, implement night collections in town and city centres, and collaborate with the police and municipal corporations to ensure that their
sanitation teams have access to roadways for collection during extended selling hours, road closures and traffic changes.
“We are fully cognizant that with the season comes additional solid waste due to home improvements, extensive cleaning and clearing, additional purchases and partying. Consequently we are urging the public, especially householders, to practice the three R’s of waste management — reduce, reuse and recycle their solid waste.”
In the meantime, NSWMA is asking the public for their support to:
1. Properly package, parcel and containerise items for collection, and
2. Not put out construction materials, bulky items such as old bathtubs, toilets, cupboards etc, with regular household solid waste as these items cannot be collected with the regular
household garbage.
