KINGSTON, Jamaica — New President of the Senate Tom Tavares Finson says he will relax the rules governing the asking of questions in the upper House.

Senator Tavares Finson who gave the undertaking moments ago after being sworn in by the clerk to the Houses of Parliament explained that the rules as they are now had in the past “incurred the ire” of Opposition members.

The Senate President has also promised to have the Parliament building retrofitted to allow the disabled access to view sittings of the Houses.

“Continuing the theme of partnership, let us commit ourselves as a Senate to work towards – through our actions and contest of ideas and public debate – a better Jamaica for all Jamaicans,” he added.

The swearing in of the 13 government senators and eight Opposition senators is now taking place inside the chamber.  

In a short while the opening and swearing in ceremony of the House of Representatives will also get underway.

Aubyn Hill was nominated Deputy Senate President.
