State Minister to clarify Cockpit Country bauxite mining
KINGSTON, Jamaica – State minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Julian Robinson is expected to speak at a press briefing Thursday regarding contentious issues surrounding mining in the Cockpit Country.
The briefing is scheduled for 10:00 am at the minister’s Trafalgar Road office, a media advisory issued Wednesday afternoon said.
Allegations from conservationists are that Noranda Jamaica Bauxite is currently preparing sections of the Cockpit Country for the mining of bauxite.
A well-placed source told OBSERVER ONLINE that while Noranda is in fact working inside the outer boundary of Cockpit Country, no mining is taking place, at least, not yet.
The Jamaican government holds majority shares in Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partnership.
