Stolen cables disable Mandela Highway stoplight
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) has reported that it is without the required spares to repair the traffic lights along the Spanish Town link road along the Mandela Highway in St Catherine.
NWA said that the traffic light has been non-functional since November 5 and could be out of use for a while longer.
The traffic light, which facilitates motorists exiting and entering the Spanish Town leg of the east/west toll road, was rendered inoperable after thieves stole the connecting cables, the NWA said in a release today.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw said that just under 400 metres of cable was stolen, and will cost approximately $3 million for repairs.
Shaw said that the NWA will now have to source the material privately, “which will have to be done in line with the government’s procurement rules, and could take some time”.
In the meantime, Shaw said that the NWA will be using the technology it now has at its disposal to police the signals, but wants the public to assist in helping to make the roads safer for all users.
