Two Manchester residents awarded for bravery in hospital shooting incident
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Manchester farmer Jermaine Christopher Rumell and fisherman Alfred George Dyght were yesterday awarded for bravery at the Heroes’ Day Parade and Awards Ceremony in Manchester.
The two were orthopaedic patients at the Mandeville Regional Hospital in July when another patient on the ward allegedly went berserk and injured a nurse and another patient.
The alleged attacker, 38-year-old Donovan Stewart reportedly used the Steinmann pin, which was being used in the treatment of his fractured leg to inflict the injuries.
Rumell and Dyght “at considerable risk” to their personal safety reportedly warded off Stewart from harming other patients until help arrived.
During the uproar the out of control Clarendon resident was shot and killed by a police who was guarding a prisoner at the hospital and intervened, police reports say.
Rumell who farms in the Spice Grove area of the parish was able to collect his award unaided on Monday while Dyght, from the Alligator Pond fishing village, was on crutches.
Fifteen individuals in total and two organisations- the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf and Projects Abroad Jamaica- were awarded at the ceremony held in the Cecil Charlton Park in the Mandeville town centre.
