US Health Department recalls curry powder distributed in Jamaica
THERE has been a recall of curry powder distributed in Jamaica.
It was not clear where the curry is manufactured, but the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a news release, said the Miami-based Oriental Packaging Company has recalled the curry powder, which contains lead.
The products — ORIENTAL Hot Curry Powder 50lb Bulk, OCHO-RIOS Jamaican Nice Mild and Spicy, Hot Curry Powder 4oz, and OCHO-RIOS Mild Curry Powder 5 lb — were recalled last month, making it the second recall for Oriental Packaging Company in 2016.
The release, published on the FDA website, states: “While the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not set a specific limit on lead in spices, there is a limit of 0.1 ppm in candy. The environmental Protections Agency (EPA) has stated that lead levels of 0.015 ppm in drinking water require treatment.”
According to the release, lead can accumulate in the body over time and can cause serious and sometimes permanent adverse health consequences.
The product was also distributed through retail stores in Florida.
The products can be identified by the lot numbers — 091316A and 091316B — and best before dates — 9/19/19 through 9/21/19 — which can be found on the top of the cap and on the bag.
Consumers are urged to throw away the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
