KSAC launches Marcus Garvey inspired poetry competition
Mayor of Kingston and St Andrew, Angela Brown Burke has launched a poetry competition for secondary schools under the theme, ‘Proud of My Black Skin’.
The competition which is sponsored by the KSAC was launched on Marcus Garvey Day, August 17, in honour of the man who once served as councillor in the corporation.
In announcing the competition, Burke remarked “Our black skin is the embodiment of the creative thinking of our young and their celebration of our rich cultural heritage greatness, royalty and heritage of our forefathers and this competition is expected to stimulate.” She went on to state that the exercise would help to reinforce, instill or re-instill racial pride in our ancestry, our history and our courage through creative literary endeavour.
The competition will commence on Thursday 1st September, just ahead of the reopening of the school year and will end on Friday 30th September, 2016. Poems are limited to a maximum of one-hundred (100) words and entries can be submitted either by a group as a class project, or by an individual student. Awards will be made to the top five entries during National Heritage Week in October.
Entry forms will be available from the KSAC’s website, www.ksac.gov.jm, councillors and schools from the September 1, 2016.
