Trial of pyramid scheme operator fails to get underway
RESIDENT Magistrate Paulette Williams on Thursday set August 14 as the new trial date for failed pyramid scheme operator, Esmie Jones, after her attorney, Raynorcliffe Edwards, failed to show up at the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court. Jones was remanded in custody.
Jones, a 63 year-old retired school teacher, is charged with fraud in connection with the collapse of her Speedy Cash scheme through which hundreds of depositors lost over $100 million.
Speedy Cash was one of the several schemes that mushroomed and eventually collapsed in the western end of the island. Several operators have been slapped with fraud charges in connection with the failed schemes but to date none has been brought to trial.
