Cops believe bartender’s death a contract killing
ST ANN’S BAY, St Ann — The St Ann’s Bay police theorise that the bartender who was shot dead in the town Sunday night was the victim of a contract killing.
The bartender, Paulette Brown, 30, of Clamstead, near Lime Hall in St Ann, was at the bar at the Roxborough bathing beach in St Ann’s Bay when a man armed with a gun walked up and shot her in the head. Her 13 year-old daughter who was with her was also shot. Both were taken to hospital where Brown died, and her daughter, whose name is being withheld by the police, admitted.
The police said neither the businessplace nor any of the patrons were robbed.
According to the police, shortly after 7:00 Sunday evening, Brown was serving patrons at the bar when the killing took place. One man, who claimed to be a witness to the shooting, said the bartender was attending to a customer when the gunman walked up and shot her in the head and then shot her daughter who was trying to escape.
Washington Campbell, Brown’s former boyfriend and her daughter’s father said the first news he got was that both mother and daughter were shot and killed. He said, however, that he was saddened over the death of Brown and the great lost it would be for his daughter who is now without a mother.
On Monday, People’s National Party caretaker for North East St Ann, Carol Jackson said she was shocked and horrified. “Not only have I lost a loyal and hard working supporter, but I believe this killing has dealt a terrible blow to every law abiding citizen in this constituency,” she said.
Jackson also denounced what she said was the continued attacks on the defenseless women in Jamaica and appealed to Jamaicans to commit themselves to give greater support to the police in their fight against crime in the year 2002.
